Author Guidelines

Manuscript submission


Manuscripts should be submitted as an .rtf or .doc file to The multiple blind peer reviewing process requires anonymous manuscripts. Avoid any information in the article which could reveal your identity. Authors should provide their name, address, title of the paper, and a short abstract (no more than 300 words) in their cover email. Authors are expected to follow the good academic practice of not submitting an article to several journals at a time. Publication languages are English and German.


We will acknowledge receipt of your submission as soon as it reaches us. If you don’t receive any acknowledgment within a week, please re-send your submission. Referees are expected to review papers within 6 weeks, and we aim at notifying you about our final decision within 8 weeks.


Style sheet


Please keep the formatting of your submission as simple as possible and see the following notes for details.



  • Please make sure that you use proper cursive quotation marks and apostrophes throughout: “x” and ‘x’ not "x" 'x'.
  • Please use double quotation marks (“x”) for quotations within the running text. Quotations of more than 3 lines should be put in the special quotation format.
  • Quotations inside quotations are put in single quotation marks (‘x’).



  • References are given in the main body of the text.
    • Single Author: (Author Year:_Page) and (Author Year).
    • Different authors are separated by semicolons: (Author Year; Author Year; Author Year:_Page).
    • Single authors are separated by commas, there is no need to repeat the name: (Author1 Year1, Year2, Year3; Author 2 year:_Page).
    • More than one reference per year by the same author are marked by a, b, c etc. Here the author’s name is repeated. (Author1 Yeara, Author1 Yearb, Author1 Yearc; Author2 year)


  • Please give full page numbers, e.g., 117-119, NOT 117-9. Do not use f., ff.
  • Please provide a full list of references at the end of the article. Make sure that every entry in the list is mentioned in the text and vice versa.
  • The following examples indicate how to refer to books and articles:
    • Fillmore, Charles J., Paul Kay & Mary Catherine O’Connor. 1988. Regularity and idiomaticity in grammatical constructions: The case of ‘let alone’. Language 64. 510-528.

Examples, Translation and Glosses

  • Translations (in glosses and in the text) are put in single quotation marks (‘x’).
  • Italics should be used for examples within the running text: e.g. Bücherwurm (‘bookworm’).


  • Please provide interlinear glosses for all non-English examples:

  • Please use tabstops to align the words.
  • Please put grammatical category labels in the glosses in small capitals.
  • You are strongly encouraged to use the Leipzig Glossing Rules available at



  • Emphasis can be marked either by italics or bold face (choose one and be consistent) – please do not use underlining or capitals.



  • Please use endnotes, not footnotes.


Special characters

  • Special characters should be expressed with Arial Unicode MS.


Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  3. When available, the URLs to access references online are provided, including those for open access versions of the reference. The URLs are ready to click (e.g.,
  4. The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  6. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review) have been followed.

Constructions will only be available online, through a freely accessible online content system. Articles may be printed by subscribers for private use only. Copyright generally remains with the author(s).
