Author Guidelines

All submissions need to be submitted through the online system on this site. You'll need to register as an author before you can do that.

Click here to start a submission.

For initial submissions, we do not require any particular style. Please submit a pdf of your manuscript, with ample margins for reviewer notes. All references should include the full name of the author (including first names) and include links if they are available online.

If you have any questions about whether a particular manuscript might be appropriate for JHS, please send us an email.

If you want to anticipate something close to the final typeset look of JHS, you are welcome to use the stylesheet of the journal and follow the formatting guidelines. These are available as a zip archive. Please direct questions about the stylesheets to Moreno Mitrović.

If your submission is accepted after the peer review process, we will provide you with detailed guidelines for the preparation of the final version. JHS hopes that authors can provide a considerable amount of the labour needed for the final copy-editing and typesetting process.

Author's Agreement

As part of the submission procedure, you will receive the following form via email. Please fill in the blanks, write your name and the date in the signature line, and return it via email to the editors. Please note that the default license allows "derivative works", such as translations, without further authorization by the journal or the authors. Upon explicit request by the authors, any particular article can instead be published under a slightly more restrictive license which does not allow derivative works without specific permission by the authors. The copyright notice in the pdf of the article will specify which license the article is published under. If you would prefer this more restrictive license, please email the editor.

Publication Agreement and Copyright License

This is a publication agreement and copyright license (”Agreement”) regarding a written manuscript currently entitled, ______________________________________________________________, (manuscript title) (”Article”) to be published in “Journal of Historical Syntax” (the “Journal”). The parties to this Agreement are: _________________________________________ (corresponding author), _________________________________________ (individually, or if more than one author, collectively, “Author”), and the publishing editors of “Journal of Historical Syntax”, (”Publisher”).

  1. The Author has created and owns the copyright to the Article.
  2. The Author represents and warrants that s/he has the full power and authority to enter into this Agreement and to grant the rights granted in this Agreement. The Author represents and warrants that the Article furnished to the Publisher has not been published previously. For purposes of this paragraph, making a copy of the Article accessible over the Internet, including, but not limited to, posting the Article to a database accessible over the Internet, does not constitute prior publication so long as such copy indicates that the Article is not in final form, such as by designating such copy to be a “draft,” a “working paper,” or “work-in-progress”.
  3. The Author and the Publisher agree that the Author may grant a Creative Commons copyright license in the Article to the general public, in particular a Attribution-Noncommercial 3.0 License, which is incorporated herein by reference and is further specified at
    http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/legalcode (human readable summary at
    http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0).
  4. The Author grants to the Publisher a royalty-free, irrevocable, perpetual, worldwide nonexclusive license to publish, reproduce, display, distribute, and use the Article in any form, either separately or as part of a collective work, including but not limited to a nonexclusive license to publish the Article in the Journal, its electronic archive, its paper archive, or any collection of the Journal’s works in any form whatsoever, copy and distribute individual reprints of the Article, and authorize reproduction and distribution of the Article or an abstract thereof by means of computerized retrieval systems.
  5. The Author retains ownership of all rights under copyright in the Article, and all rights not expressly granted in this Agreement.
  6. The Author agrees that s/he shall not publish the Article in any other journal or edited collection, whether electronic or otherwise, in substantially the same form as the Article, without acknowledging prior publication in the Journal.
  7. This Agreement shall become effective and binding at the date of formal acceptance of the Article for publication by the Journal.

I HAVE READ AND AGREE FULLY WITH THE TERMS OF THIS AGREEMENT.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The author has read the Author Guidelines for JHS.
  2. The Author has created and owns the copyright to the Article.
  3. The Article has not been published previously and is not under submission elsewhere.
  4. The Author agrees to the Author Agreement of the journal. The acknowledgment email you will receive from JHS upon submission of your manuscript includes the Author Agreement. Please fill in the blanks, write your name and the date in the signature line, and return it via email to the editors.
  5. We do not require that submitted papers be anonymous, since this is frequently an unattainable goal. However, the author of a paper has the right to remain anonymous to the reviewers throughout the review process. In that case, the author should take care to anonymize the paper, and should include in a clearly visible position on the front page the text "Submitted to Journal of Historical Syntax for anonymous review." The reviewers are then considered under obligation not to attempt to discern the identity of the author.
  6. The Journal allows and strongly encourages posting of the manuscript to the Author's website and to LingBuzz or a similar archive. (Of course, this step should not be taken if the Author desires an anonymous review process.)

Copyright Notice

Upon explicit request by the authors, any particular article can instead be published under a slightly more restrictive license which does not allow derivative works without specific permission by the authors. The copyright notice in the pdf of the article will specify which license the article is published under.
